Low testosterone can affect much more than sexual function. Hormonal changes in men may contribute to persistent tiredness, reduced motivation, low mood, poor concentration, reduced muscle mass, increased body fat, reduced strength, poor sleep, low libido, erectile difficulties and a general feeling that something is “not quite right”.
At Promed Health & Derma, our Men’s Hormone Assessment is designed to investigate these symptoms properly rather than relying on a single testosterone result.
Your assessment begins with a detailed review of your symptoms, medical history, current medication, lifestyle, cardiovascular risk factors and general health. Blood testing is then used to build a wider hormonal and metabolic picture.
Testing may include total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), calculated free testosterone or free androgen index, LH, FSH, oestradiol, prolactin and thyroid function. Depending on your age, symptoms and medical history, we may also assess full blood count, haematocrit, liver and kidney function, cholesterol, blood glucose or HbA1c, PSA and other relevant health markers.
Diagnosing Testosterone Deficiency
A diagnosis of testosterone deficiency should not be based on symptoms alone or on one isolated blood test.
Testosterone levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day and can also be affected by poor sleep, acute illness, medication, weight, alcohol intake and other medical conditions.
Where testosterone deficiency is suspected, appropriately timed blood tests may need to be repeated before a diagnosis is made. Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms and overall clinical picture.
This allows us to identify men who may genuinely benefit from treatment while also looking for other possible causes of symptoms such as thyroid disease, anaemia, vitamin deficiencies, metabolic problems, sleep disorders or medication effects.
A Full Health Assessment – Not Just a Testosterone Test
Our aim is to understand why you feel the way you do.
Where appropriate, your clinician will discuss lifestyle measures, weight management, sleep, nutrition, exercise and other factors that can influence natural testosterone production and general wellbeing.
If testosterone replacement therapy is clinically appropriate, the available treatment options, expected benefits, limitations and potential risks will be discussed with you before treatment begins.
Safe Testosterone Monitoring
Testosterone replacement therapy requires structured medical monitoring.
Once treatment has started, regular clinical reviews and blood tests are used to assess your response and ensure treatment remains safe and appropriate.
Monitoring may include testosterone levels, full blood count and haematocrit, PSA where clinically appropriate, blood pressure, cholesterol and metabolic markers, as well as assessment of symptoms and potential treatment-related side effects.
Haematocrit is particularly important because testosterone therapy can increase red blood cell production in some men. Regular monitoring allows changes to be identified and managed safely.
Treatment should be reviewed over time rather than simply issuing repeat prescriptions without appropriate clinical assessment.
Who Should Consider a Men’s Hormone Assessment?
You may benefit from an assessment if you are experiencing:
Persistent fatigue or reduced energy
Loss of motivation or drive
Low mood or irritability
Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
Reduced libido
Erectile difficulties
Loss of muscle mass or strength
Increased abdominal body fat
Reduced exercise performance or recovery
Poor sleep
Reduced facial or body hair
Changes in fertility
Symptoms that have developed gradually with age
Men already using testosterone who want appropriate medical monitoring may also benefit from a structured review.
